Roof Tear-Off Dumpster Guide for Sioux Falls (Shingles & Weight)

By the Dump Dynasty Team · Last verified October 13, 2026

For a Sioux Falls roof tear-off, we rent one size: a 20-yard dumpster (20×8×3 ft). Weight runs out before the space does. General industry estimates put 3-tab shingles at about 230–250 lb per square per layer and architectural shingles at about 300–320 lb. A 20-square roof is about 2.5–3.2 tons. The 7-day rental is $390 with 1 ton included, plus $45 per extra ton, prorated.

The short answer: one size, and the 7-day rental

Dump Dynasty rents a 20-yard roll-off only. It is 20 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 3 ft high. For a roof tear-off, start with the 7-day 20-yard dumpster rental at $390. That price includes delivery, pickup, and 1 ton. Our Sioux Falls dumpster pricing table lists roofing tear-offs on the 7-day rental.

A small repair can use the 24-hour rental at $300 or the 3-day rental at $330. Both include the same 1 ton. Call or text (605) 937-5430 and tell us the squares and layers. We will say which rental fits the job. We do not publish a separate roofer price on this page.

How much do shingles weigh?

These figures are general industry estimates, not a Dump Dynasty scale ticket and not a guarantee for your roof. A square is 100 sq ft of roof. The weights below are per layer.

Shingle type Estimate per square, per layer Planning note
3-tab asphalt About 230–250 lb We use 250 lb when a single planning number is needed
Architectural (dimensional) About 300–320 lb Heavier than 3-tab. Use 320 lb for a cautious estimate

A bundle is not a square. Three bundles usually make one square, and a bundle is about 60–80 lb. Do not plan a tear-off as if one bundle weighs a few hundred pounds.

Published calculators in this range include SDC Container's shingle calculator (about 230 lb for a 3-tab tear-off and about 300 lb for architectural, with a 250 lb asphalt benchmark), The Roofing Manual tear-off calculator (230 lb for 3-tab and 320 lb for architectural, and about 15–20% more when the roof is wet), and Roofings Calculator (about 240 lb for 3-tab and about 300 lb for architectural). Those sites are not our policy. Your scale ticket is.

A tear-off weighs more than the new shingles

The shingle weight is the starting point. A tear-off also includes felt or underlayment, nails, and flashing. Moisture adds more. Wet shingles can weigh about 15–20% more than dry ones. That 15–20% figure is a general industry estimate, not a measurement from a Sioux Falls job.

Layers multiply

Each layer is another full pass of that weight. Two layers are about double. Three layers are about triple. If a previous roof was left in place, count the layers before you book. When you are unsure, call or text (605) 937-5430 and describe what you can see at the edge of the roof.

How to estimate the tons

Squares × layers × pounds per square ÷ 2,000 = tons. Squares = roof square footage ÷ 100. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. A 2,000 sq ft house often has more roof than that, because the roof is larger than the footprint. Use the roof area, not the living area, unless you already know the squares.

Estimate only. 20 squares × 1 layer × 250 lb (3-tab planning figure) = 5,000 lb = 2.5 tons. The rental includes 1 ton, so the extra is 1.5 tons × $45 = $67.50. A 7-day rental at $390 plus that extra is about $457.50.

The same 20 squares in architectural shingles, at 320 lb, is about 6,400 lb, or 3.2 tons. Two layers of 3-tab at 250 lb is about 5 tons. These are planning numbers. Felt, flashing, and water are not in them.

Weight estimates only. Not a promise that any row fits in one container.
Roof Planning math Estimated tons What to budget
10 squares, 1 layer, 3-tab 10 × 250 lb 1.25 7-day $390 + about $11.25 extra weight ≈ $401.25
20 squares, 1 layer, 3-tab 20 × 250 lb 2.5 7-day $390 + $67.50 ≈ $457.50
20 squares, 1 layer, architectural 20 × 320 lb 3.2 7-day $390 + about $99 ≈ $489
40–50 squares (about a 2,000 sq ft house), 1 layer, 3-tab 40–50 × 250 lb About 5–6 Likely two loads. Call or text (605) 937-5430. We do not publish a second-load price.

Assumptions behind the table:

  • The debris from that row is what you are estimating. A heavy roof may need more than one container.
  • 3-tab uses 250 lb per square. Architectural uses 320 lb. Both are general industry estimates.
  • Felt, nails, flashing, and moisture are not added.
  • Extra weight is $45 per ton, prorated, past the 1 ton included in the rental.
  • The dollar figures are before sales tax, mileage, and extra days. Sales tax is additional. See get a quote.
  • Extra days are $15 per day. If the job runs long, see how to extend, swap, or end the rental early. Delivery beyond 15 miles of Sioux Falls is $1.50 per mile.

The number that gets billed is the landfill scale ticket, not this table. The dumpster size guide walks through the same house-size example.

How many squares fit?

Volume is rarely the problem. A 20-yard box has room. Shingles are dense, so the included ton and the truck's load are what you plan around. We do not publish a maximum number of squares for one container.

A typical 2,000 sq ft Sioux Falls house has roughly 40–50 squares of roof. At the 250 lb 3-tab planning figure, that is about 5–6 tons. That house usually means two loads, not one. A 2,000 sq ft roof is a different measurement: that is 20 squares, about 2.5 tons at 250 lb per square, before felt and moisture.

Call or text (605) 937-5430 with your squares and layers. We will estimate the weight. We will not give you a square count that "always fits."

Big roofs: two loads

When the roof is a full house, split the tear-off. Fill the first 20-yard from one side, then call or text (605) 937-5430 to arrange a second drop for the other side. Swapping a full dumpster is arranged on that call, and we do not publish a price for the second drop. Same-day dumpster delivery in Sioux Falls, Brandon, and Harrisburg is available when you book before 2:00 PM Monday through Friday.

What can go in the dumpster

Asphalt shingles, roofing felt and underlayment, flashing, and metal roofing are accepted. Gutters and downspouts are accepted with the rest of the tear-off.

Tile, slate, wood decking, and plywood are not confirmed on this page. Call or text (605) 937-5430 before you load them. Banned items — paint, tires, batteries, electronics, and the rest — are on what not to put in a dumpster.

Where the load goes

The Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill accepts construction and demolition debris. The city's rates page has listed construction and demolition at $40 per ton, with a $20 minimum, for 2026. We could not re-check that page while building this guide, because the city site blocks automated fetches. Confirm the current rate on the landfill rates page and the landfill pass page before you rely on it. Landfill phone: (605) 367-8162.

Our rental price already includes disposal of the 1 ton included in the rental. Extra tons on our ticket are $45 per ton, prorated. That is our price, not the city's gate rate. Whether shingles should be separated for recycling is not confirmed. Call or text (605) 937-5430 before you sort a roof into its own pile.

Loading tips

  • Put shingles on the bottom and spread them evenly. Do not pile them all on one side.
  • Keep the load at or below the top of the walls. Do not stack a mound above the sides.
  • Mix shingles with lighter debris when you have it, so the load is not a solid block of shingles.
  • If the container will sit in the street, or if the job is in Tea, read Sioux Falls dumpster permit rules before delivery day.

The truck needs about 22 ft of straight access and 23+ ft of overhead clearance, on a hard, level surface.

FAQ

What size dumpster do I need for a roof tear-off in Sioux Falls?

Dump Dynasty rents one size: a 20-yard dumpster, 20 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 3 ft high. On a shingle tear-off, weight runs out before the space does. The 7-day rental is $390 with 1 ton included. A larger roof may need a second load. Call or text (605) 937-5430.

How much does a square of shingles weigh?

General industry estimates put 3-tab shingles at about 230–250 lb per square per layer and architectural shingles at about 300–320 lb. Felt, nails, flashing, and moisture add more. Wet shingles can weigh about 15–20% more. These are estimates, not a guarantee. The landfill scale ticket sets the weight.

How many tons is a 20-square roof?

Using general industry estimates, a 20-square roof is about 2.5 tons for one layer of 3-tab shingles (20 × 250 lb) or about 3.2 tons for architectural shingles (20 × 320 lb). Two layers roughly doubles that. This is an estimate. The scale ticket sets the weight.

How much weight is included, and what does extra weight cost?

Every rental includes 1 ton. Extra weight is $45 per ton, prorated, billed from the scale ticket at pickup. Estimate only: 2.5 tons means 1.5 tons past the included ton, which is $67.50 extra. A 7-day rental at $390 would be about $457.50 before tax, mileage, and extra days.

Can I put shingles, felt, and flashing in the dumpster?

Yes. Asphalt shingles, roofing felt, and flashing are accepted. Metal roofing is accepted too. Banned items are listed on our what not to put in a dumpster page.

Do I need a permit for a roof dumpster?

In Sioux Falls, a dumpster on your own driveway usually does not need a city permit. A container on the street follows the rule on our Sioux Falls dumpster permit rules page. Tea requires a permit for every dumpster, including one in a private driveway. Call or text (605) 937-5430 if the container will sit in the street or in Tea.

What if the dumpster fills before the roof is done?

A big tear-off is often split into two loads. Call or text (605) 937-5430 to arrange the second drop. We do not publish a price for that second drop. Same-day delivery in Sioux Falls is available when you book before 2:00 PM Monday through Friday.
